Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of Scouting America. It was founded by E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson on July, 16, 1915. This group was built around the principles of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. It is a youth led organization (with some adult supervision) meant to recognize Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law in their daily lives, provide service to local councils and communities, and to promote long term camping.
Induction
Instead of signing up or applying to be a member, the Scout is voted upon by their fellow Scouts in their BSA Troop. However, this can only be done if the Scout in question has met specific rank and camping requirements. Such requirements include: The Scout must be First Class rank or higher, have at least 15 nights of Scouting-approved camping, and be approved by the unit leader with a >50% vote by the youth.
Once the Scout has been voted on and accepted the opportunity, they will be invited for an induction experience known as "The Ordeal" or "Induction Weekend." This experience will focus on service, personal growth, leadership, and a deeper connection to the Scouting ideals. Once completed, the Scout will be sorted into youth-led groups known as lodges.
